The top Symbol for each syllable is the Hiragana for it and the bottom symbol is the Kanji.

Yus... Top is Hiragana, bottom is katakana.

To be perfectly honest, I think that there are some kanji that you can learn, and the rest you just have to find out as you go along.

Sometimes you're lucky, and you get what I personally call 'friendly kanji' XD. I forget the correct name for it, but it's kanji with small hiragana written above it, so you know immediately how to say it. But, I think that's for Japanese children, I mean, they're still learning, too ;].

If you've ever watched an anime, you'll probably notice that they put the lyrics to the title/credits song at the bottom of the screen, in kanji/hiragana. This usually has 'friendly kanji' and you could potentially learn a lot from that, if you have a better memory than I do and have a notebook or something handy... ^^

But make sure you know hiragana (and katakana, preferably), before you start thinking about kanji. Kanji is a whole other world, believe me XD

(*Wallflower just realises she just wrote a big essay for a post that has been here and inactive for like 6 months*) XD

Hi Wallflower! The 'easy kanji' you refer to is called 'furigana'. I have found that learning to recognise a kanji first (rather than trying to struggle with learning both the 'on' and 'kun' readings plus the number of strokes, direction and order of writing the strokes, etc.) helps somewhat.   I struggle more with conversation - can anyone help?  I use Skype.  How about you?
